Below you will find everything you will need for your Montana fly fishing trip. Our weather and conditions can change quickly, so it’s important to come prepared. Rest assured we’ve got you covered on any gear you may forget!

TRIP TIPS

PACKING LIST

Fly Rods*:

  • Dry fly fishing – 4 or 5 weight fly rod

  • Nymphing – 5 or 6 weight fly rod

  • Streamers – 6 or 7 weight fly rod

Recommended Gear*:

  • Chest Waders

  • Wading boots (cool weather)

  • Wading sandals (warm weather)

  • Layers (Breathable layers for Summer, Insulating layers for the cooler months)

  • Rain coat

  • Sun screen

  • Polarized Sun glasses

FISHING LICENSE

The state of Montana has made it easy to purchase your license, please use the link below.  Remember to keep a screen shot of your license on your phone.

ALCOHOL

There is not alcohol available for purchase at the lodge as Big Horn is a dry county. However you are welcome to bring your own. If you are flying into Billings there are a number of options. We recommend CostcoCity Vineyard and Albertsons for beer and wine. For spirits, Bottles & Shots is the closest liquor store to the airport.

GRATUITY

Gratuities are never expected but always appreciated. As guests frequently inquire about gratuity amounts, we offer the suggested guidelines:

Guides: $150-200 per-day, per-boat

Lodge Staff: $25-35 per-guest, per-day

GETTING TO KING FISHER LODGE

TRAVEL BY AIR

If you have your own plane Fort Smith has an excellent 3800 foot runway (no tower). Contact us prior to arrival for ride options. If you fly into the Billings Airport, we recommend Cody Shuttle Service: (307)527-6789. There are also car rental services in town.

DRIVING

From the West: Take I-90 south from Billings, travel 44 miles and take the first Hardin exit. Follow signs for Yellowtail Damn and Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area. onto state highway 313. At St.Xavier (a post office and abandoned school) take a left at the post office – there is a sign for Bighorn Nat’l Recreation Area. Stay on Hwy 313 until mile-marker 38 on the right side of the road, take the first right onto the first paved road marked by a river access sign. Follow the road a half-mile to a T junction and turn right. Kingfisher Lodge is on your left about 100 yards up the road.

From the South: Head north on I-90, take exit 509 at Crow Agency. It winds through the Crow Reservation and connects with Hwy 313, take a left and continue as listed above through St. Xavier toward Bighorn Canyon and mile marker 38.

From the East: Head west on I-94 exit at Custer and take Hwy 47 south to Hardin. At Hardin Hwy 47 becomes 313, follow directions for “from the west”.

Package Exclusions: Accommodations tax, guide & staff gratuities, alcohol, and transportation to and from the lodge.

Pets Policy: To ensure our guest’s comfort, we request that pets be kenneled in the rooms at all times. If you do not have a kennel, we can provide one for you.

We accept all forms of payment. If you are using a credit card, there will be a 3% surcharge.

A 50% deposit is required to hold your reservation. Full payment is due 45 days prior to trip start date.
